an ode to roadkill, ACS

There you lie statically by the road, thrusted into an eternal sleep

hibernation came too soon, for you and countless friends.

Do others feel sorrow for you, too?

Mangled guts and swarms of vultures prey upon you,

life is still a precious, sacred thing, even for forgotten creatures like you.

Your family, still roaming in the land of the living—a silent act of bravery

they miss you now that you’re gone—even if they don’t understand it.

I hope in your forever dream, you are engulfed in hazy sunlight,

surrounded by tall oak and wispy leaves

I think about that instead of your wry neck,

contorted on the street.
